Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of doing yoga?
Yoga offers a balanced approach to both physical and mental well-being. A regular yoga practice builds strength, flexibility, and joint mobility while improving posture and healthy movement patterns. It also helps regulate the nervous system by emphasizing breath awareness, which can lower stress, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of calm. Many people find that yoga increases their ability to focus and enhances emotional resilience, and helps them to stay grounded during daily challenges. Over time, it can support better sleep, improve body awareness, and foster a more compassionate relationship with oneself.
Do I need to be flexible to do yoga?
You don’t need to be flexible to start a yoga practice—flexibility is something yoga helps develop, it is not a requirement to be flexible to begin yoga. Yoga meets you exactly where you are, offering variations, props, and supportive alignment so your body can move safely and comfortably. By gently lengthening muscles, improving circulation, and encouraging a relaxed, steady breath, yoga gradually increases range of motion over time. The repetition of thoughtful, mindful movement allows tissues to soften and joints to become more mobile. What matters most is showing up with curiosity and patience, trusting that your flexibility will evolve naturally as your practice grows.
Do you have classes suitable for beginners?
All levels are welcome to attend any of our classes. Please take a look at the class descriptions and find a class that suits your needs. We recommend starting with a Beginners Bliss class which is designed for those new or returning to yoga, or a Hatha Flow class as these more at a slower pace. However, whatever class you attend, our skilled yoga teachers will be happy to assist you and to answer your questions.
How can yoga support my other activities?
Yoga can be a valuable complement to other sports and activities such as hiking and gardening, because it strengthens the body in balanced ways and improves mobility, stability, and control. Many athletic activities emphasize repetitive movements, which can lead to tightness or imbalance over time; yoga helps counter this by gently stretching overworked muscles and activating those that may be underused. The focus on breath and body awareness can improve coordination, reaction time, and overall efficiency of movement.
Yoga also supports recovery by reducing tension, enhancing circulation, and promoting relaxation—helping athletes return to training more quickly and with less risk of injury. Overall, it offers a restorative counterweight to the physical intensity of sports and other activities, allowing you to move with greater ease and resilience.
What do I wear and bring to class?
Any comfortable workout clothes such as T-shirt, and leggings or shorts. Please bring a yoga mat and water bottle. We do have a few mats for first-timers to borrow and we provide props such as yoga blocks, straps and bolsters.
Can children attend adults classes?
Children under the age of 15 are not permitted in adult classes. We do have monthly Family Yoga and offer Kids Yoga Camps and Toddler Yoga (contact Nallely at hello@yoyoga.ca for more information).
